My 3 month trip to Colombia and Mexico has ended.
South America was my dream for a long time, but some of the impressions I got were different from what I expected.
The scenes that come across my mind now are the peaceful, calm people doing their daily activities and the lush mountains that resemble Japan. Colombia and Mexico both had mixed culture of new and old that had existed before the Spanish invasion, and were searching for their own paths.
Visiting various local craftsmen and seeing the crafts made me realize the richness of natural resources. The bold designs which come from these had a great impact on me.
As I travel, I feel more and more that people are living for happiness everywhere.
But the form of happiness is always different. Sometimes I think people tend to look for ways to criticize things that are different or outside of them, but in learning and then knowing the history of the land and thinking about the changes in people's mind earnestly has convinced me of this.
Culture is like a crystal that builds up in the repetition of everyday life, and it is always in a slow change. But even with completely different crystals grown in each land, wouldn't it be nice that someday they get the same sunshine and make a beautiful reflection like a big rainbow.

コロンビアとメキシコへ３ヶ月滞在しました。
ずっと前から夢だった南米。
でも思っていたイメージとはまた違ったものも感じて来ました。
今ふと思い出す光景は、穏やかな人々の営みの様子や日本にも似た緑豊かな山々。
コロンビアもメキシコも、スペイン侵略前から続く原住民の文化と新しい文化が混ざり合いながらそれぞれ独自の道を模索して進んでいると感じました。
そして色々な職人さんを訪ねたり、現地の工芸品に触れて1番感じたのは自然からの資源の豊富さ。それゆえにできる大胆な造形にはすごく衝撃を受けました。
旅を重ねるにつれ、どこでも人は幸せを求めて暮らしているということをリアルに感じます。でもその幸せの形は本当にさまざま。時には外から見て批判したくなることもあるかもしれませんが、その土地の歴史を知って人々の心の変化に寄り添って考えると私なりにとても納得がいきます。
文化というのは、日々の生活の繰り返しの中で積み重なってできる結晶のようなもので、いつもゆっくりとした変化の中にありますが、その土地それぞれで育った全然違う結晶でもいつか同じ太陽の光を浴びて一つの大きな虹のようなリフレクションができたら素敵だなぁと思います。
